Alston Art Apartments Holiday Cottage Description
These architect designed cottages are situated in a quiet corner of the charming historic town of Alston, high up in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The development which won an Eden District Council Design Award in 2009, consists of four 2 storey apartments (modern cottages), two of which are completely new and two which are part conversion and part new build. The owners live in one of the cottages and the other three are available as holiday lets, which for 3 consecutive years have each been awarded four stars from Visit Britain and the Enjoy England Gold Award for outstanding quality.
Each cottage has 2 bedrooms and one bathroom: two of the cottages sleep 4 with one king or superking bedroom and one twin bedroom each. The largest, "Sowerberry" sleeps 5 and has one king size bedroom and one family bedroom with a double and a single bed. They can be rented together as a group to sleep up to 13 people.
The cottages are owner managed and each cottage has its own individual charm and distinct character, incorporating a wealth of attractive features including solid oak floors, exposed beams and many other interesting little details. Each cottage has its own external patio area, one with a mill-race flowing through it, and two cottages have first floor living rooms opening out onto private balconies. The cottages are tastefully furnished with a blend of contemporary and country style furnishings to a very high standard, including paintings and prints by artists from our local region, creating the perfect ambience for a relaxing holiday at any time.
At the heart of the North Pennines ‘Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ Alston is an excellent base to explore this largely undiscovered and unspoilt area, with its wide sweeping landscape, tumbling waterfalls, and a wealth of wildlife and wild flowers. Alston is also a town steeped in history, with a good range of speciality shops, tearooms, local crafts, and character inns serving traditional ales and good food. You can forget your car and enjoy many good local walks right from the doorstep, from gentle riverside rambles to challenging hikes across the fells. Local attractions include the South Tynedale Railway and the Hub Museum both run by volunteers, and Killhope lead-mining museum reflecting how the area’s geology has shaped its history.
At the hub of five routes, Alston is also an ideal centre for exploring Hadrian’s Wall and Northumberland National Park to the North, Durham City (world heritage site) to the east, beautiful Upper Teesdale and the Yorkshire Dales to the south, and the Lake District to the west - all within an hour’s drive.
