The Dales Way, an 84-mile footpath from Ilkley to Bowness-on-Windermere, passes through the village along the banks of the River Wharfe. If you’re looking for a shorter route, try the path to the summit of Buckden Pike, Wharfedale’s second-highest peak. It’s a moderately strenuous climb to the top, but you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the dales. There’s a memorial cross there for the five Polish members of the Royal Air Force who died when their plane crashed into the Pike in 1942. Buckden has a fascinating history of lead mining and hunting, and the remains of an old mine can still be seen on the village’s outskirts. Nearby, a stone circle is thought to be the remnants of a pre-historic burial mound. If you fancy a pint of Yorkshire ale before retiring to your holiday cottage in Buckden, head to the George Inn in the neigbouring hamlet of Hubberholme. This historic pub has a reputation for serving some of the region’s best pies. Try beef and beetroot or chicken, ham and leek, both of which are award-winners. Buckden is an excellent base for visiting the Yorkshire Dales’ villages and market towns. Kettlewell, Grassington, Askrigg, Hardraw and Hawes are less than a half-hour drive from the village.
