Clawton is a small, quintessentially English village in the far west corner of North Devon. It has number of striking historical sites, including the stunning Norman St Leonard’s Church, which features beautiful 15th century stone arches. There are no shops in the village, but a short drive will bring you to Holsworthy, a delightful market town with a selection of independent shops and atmospheric pubs. Every Wednesday morning, local farmers sell high-quality produce from stalls in the town square. Look out for Dan the Fish Man, who sells the day’s catch, fresh from Clovelly Harbour. Clawton holiday cottages are perfectly positioned for exploring the spectacular coastline of North Devon and Cornwall. A short drive west is Bude, a lovely resort with sandy beaches, surf shops and some excellent places to eat. In both directions from Bude, the coast path is at its most impressive. Crackington Haven, Sandymouth and Welcombe Mouth are all dramatic surf spots, while further east, the Hartland Peninsula offers solitude, towering cliffs and shipwrecks. Self-catering holidays in Clawton also provide easy access to Dartmoor National Park, where windswept moorland and enchanting wooded valleys await discovery. The bustling market towns of Launceston in Cornwall and Okehampton in Devon are also worth a visit.
