North Devon Holiday Homes in Great Torrington
Great Torrington is a historic little North Devon hilltop town offering ‘to-die for’ views across the River Torridge valley from Castle Hill. (and also from holiday cottages in the town) Once the site of one of the last great Civil War battles, the town these days is much more peaceful in nature, possessing some fine self-catering accommodation, nicely located for exploring North Devon from the Atlantic Coast to Dartmoor. Still largely untouched by the big supermarkets, the shops around the Square are like a stop back in time, with butchers, bakers, hardware stores and the like proving a source of fine local produce and crafts. Local entertainment is provided by the Plough Arts Centre which presents an enticing mix of film, concerts, drama and exhibitions all year round.

Dartington Crystal has its main factory in Torrington. Visitors can take a factory tour, watching the glass blowers at work, before picking up some superb crystal bargains in the Factory Shop. Choose you dates wisely, and you can enjoy a holiday during the Torrington May Fair (dancing in the street) or witnessing one of the huge bonfires built every few years on Torrington Commons. They really are massive: in 2015 it was a full-sized replica of the BBC Children’s TV programme: Trumpton. For more on the Civil War Battle, enjoy a pint or a meal at The White Horse in the town square, where the Roundhead General Fairfax had his Headquarters. The other ‘Must See’ place to visit are the Royal Horticultural Society’s Rosemoor Gardens, nestling deep in the Torridge Valley, whose lawns, beds and floral displays will appeal to all ages, green-fingered or otherwise – even the very young.
Further afield, cycle along North Devon's Tarka Trail, a converted railway foot and cycle path, to Bideford and Instow in one direction or up wooded valleys for lunch at the Yarde Down Cafe or the Bull and Dragon in Meeth. Get active in the water with surf lessons at Westward Ho! - a 15-minute scenic riverside drive from Torrington, or feed your competitive instincts with an intense round of paint-balling or quad biking at Survival Paintball. More beaches at Instow and Northam Burrows are within easy reach, while day trips from your holiday cottage to Dartmoor and Exmoor will reward the active visitor looking to discover these superb National Parks.
