One  of the world's high academic centres of learning, where the University in Cambridge lies alongside the River Cam, and where punts for hire will give you views of so many of the colleges, all exhibiting their ancient origins. Float under  St.John's Bridge ( a copy of the Venetian Bridge of Sighs); marvel at the splendour of King's College Chapel, built by Henry V11th and where, each Christmas, its Service of Nine Lessons and Carols is broadcast across the world. Dodge the flying bicycles of the under-graduates during term-time, but then enjoy the peace of the lawns and gardens open to the public in the holidays. Every kind of food is available in its cosmopolitan eating places, and its many bookshops are an inspiration. It's easy too, to explore the typical flat countryside around the city, and where the magnificent Ely Cathedral rides high on the skyline like a great galleon.
