Wherever you are in Ivybridge, you’re never far from the turbulent River Erme, which powered the town’s mills during the 16th century. As you explore the welcoming town centre, you’ll notice a number of distinctive historical landmarks, including Ivy Bridge, a 13th century stone bridge over the river, which the town is named after – and lives up to its title with a thick covering of ivy. Look out for signs of the town’s industrial past, such as the old paper mill, and the viaduct over the River Erme. Pick up a heritage trail map from the tourist information centre for a guide to the town’s Victorian and Georgian architecture. For dramatic views of the town and surrounding moorland, take a stroll to the top of Western Beacon.

The countryside surrounding Ivybridge is scattered with ancient woods, windswept moors and magnificent gardens. Salcombe, Bantham, Hope Cove and Mothecombe are just a short drive southwards.
