To give the details of this most historical county is to set it in the centre of literature (Shakespeare). landscaped gardens and horticultural delights,  primarily Blenheim Palace (Capability Brown and Kent) , Stowe, Sulgrave House (with its early American connections), Upton House, Stonor Park, Waterperry Gardens and herb farms including the National Herb Centre and Oxford's Botanic Gardens.  Iconic buildings in Oxford, especially the Bodleian Library, home to millions of precious, rare and contemporary books, the Ashmolean Museum, St. John's College and  Christ Church  can be viewed, most of them from a boat trip; or self-punt yourself on the early reaches of England's premier river, the Thames, or  on an open-top bus tour, joining a guided walking tour or on a bicycle.  (Many freely available bicycles are a tradition of  the city - just take one and go.)  Introduce the younger members of the family to. first, Thomas the Tank Engine at Didcot Railway Centre and check out the rolling stock of early steam railway engines there, still a draw for the male population, both young and old; and then those other childhood favourites, Badger, Mole and Toad from "The Wind in the Willows"  at Henley's River and Rowing Museum. Drive to Stratford-upon-Avon where you will "meet" Shakespeare's vision in his birth-town; then explore Warwick Castle and make your way through the Cotswolds, especially during the vividly coloured leaf-fall in Autumn.
