Find My Favourite Holiday Cottages in Penistone

Penistone is a small Pennine town in South Yorkshire, sitting along the upper reaches of the River Don. A thriving market town, Penistone holds monthly farmer’s markets. Good food and healthy days exploring the southern Pennines make it a wonderful place to rent a holiday and enjoy days out with the whole family. With plenty of rural surroundings, Penistone rests in a beautiful location – climb to the top of Hartcliffe Tower, over 300-metres above sea level, to gaze at the panoramic Pennine views, including the wild landscape of the Dark Peak moorlands.

Take an evening off from self-catering to visit one of the town’s local restaurants, such as Ti Amo, ordering a delicious pizza for the kids and maybe a lobster ravioli for yourself. Spend an afternoon walking the Trans Pennine Trail, keeping an eye out for grazing Shetland ponies, especially fun for the kids – as is the Penistone Show, held each September and filled with crafts and show-jumping.

Many old buildings remain in Penistone, the oldest being the local church, dating back to the Medieval ages. Alternatively, the White Hart Pub itself dates back to 1377 – of course, a must-see, as it is not every day that you have a historical excuse to go to the pub! Visit Cawthorne Museum and see how the mills work, and later, buy some locally-produced flour, perfect for taking back to your holiday cottage and baking up something delicious with your loved ones. Come in the summer months, and you will be spoiled for choice with parades and festivals, such as the June ‘Parade Weekend’, with afternoons of acoustic acts and evenings of rock, finished with a cheerful parade on Sunday. The same month sees the Penistone Folk Festival, too – perfect for groups of music-loving friends. After all, singer-songwriter and ‘Barnsley Nightingale’ Kate Rusby hails from Penistone! For something more relaxed, there is always the local cinema or a day strolling around Magna or Eureka science centres, which is splendid for a day out with the kids to learn something new. So, if an adventure with both family and friends is what you are after, then a trip to pretty Penistone is just the ticket.
