If you visit the old market town of Lampeter in South West Wales, for a self-catering holiday, you’re sure to leave having truly been immersed in the area’s proud heritage and enriching culture. Close to the River Teifi, this is a town that is unique in that it is surrounded both by natural and urban beauty. Being home to the oldest university in Wales (and the third oldest in Britain!) means Lampeter has a lively, thriving social scene, making it a perfect place for a weekend get-away for groups of friends. Take your pick of pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants – whether you’re looking for something cosy and traditional or cool and sophisticated, Lampeter has something to offer. If you’re ready for an outdoor adventure, Lampeter Food Festival takes place in July and is held on the gorgeous campus grounds, and a holiday cottage back in town makes a perfect base to fully explore this little unspoilt Welsh town.
As it has remained more or less untouched since its farming days, Lampeter has fascinating architecture and much to entertain its visitors. Paying homage to its past, the town holds several markets, including one for cattle, and even an antiques auction that is sure to be a fun day out for any relic enthusiasts. To find out more of Lampeter’s history firsthand, you can visit Pont Steffan (‘Stephen’s Bridge’) by the River Teifi (again on the campus grounds), a Norman castle that has changed hands through time, and now serves as an educational centre. A few minutes’ walk from the town brings you to manor house Peterwell, mysteriously captivating in all its ruin, and rumoured to be cursed. If you come to Lampeter with the family, be sure to take the kids on the Town Trail, where Lampeter’s history is unfolded as you go along – including the story of poet Dylan Thomas’ attempted murder! For a slightly lighter afternoon, Cardigan Bay is a very short drive from the town, with a pretty and quiet coastline, ideal for a day in the sea. A fine town for all, Lampeter provides lots of entertainment and vibrancy for groups of friends, and also plenty of holiday activities for families.
