You probably know the feeling, you’re on holiday somewhere idyllic and you pass a beautiful holiday cottage with its own beach access and ask yourself – how did they find it?
Well, you just have.
Coxswain’s Cottage nestles in the jumble of fishermen’s cottages betwixt beach and harbour in St.Ives known as Downalong This immaculately furnished cottage sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms and has private access to the beach below. As beach villas go, you’ll be hard pressed to find somewhere else in the UK so impeccably presented.
From the street, Coxswain’s looks like it should – an old fisherman’s cottage with a granite frontage, giving little or no hint to the pleasures that lie within. Once indoors you will discover a house that spans three floors decked out with facilities including a superb starlit steam room. Whether you are looking for a snuggly winter break within earshot of the waves, or a long summer holiday within barefoot walking distance of the sand, Coxswain’s will tick tboth boxes and more with ease.
On the ground floor is a very well-equipped kitchen and a spacious living room with a squashy L-shaped sofa, large enough for everyone to gather upon in the evenings. The lounge can become a mini-cinema with a 42” smart-TV. There’s also an iPod dock ready to play your favourite holiday playlists. Meals can be taken seated around a large country-style table for six in the dining area next to the kitchen. Facilities in the latter includes a 4ring ceramic hob and cooker, microwave, Nespresso coffee machine, toaster, kettle, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, washer dryer, pots and pans, cutlery, glassware. Oh, and there is also a complimentary bottle of bubbly awaiting your arrival. Also on the ground floor is a bedroom that can be configured with twin or a king size bed and fitted wardrobes. Bedlinen, as with all the beds at Coxwain’s is 400-thread count white sheets matched with pleasingly fluffy white towels and bathrobes together with a supply of Bamford toiletries.
Steps lead down to the lower ground floor which houses the family bathroom-cum-steam room, atmospherically lit and containing a full-size bath, loo and heated towel rail. The steam room itself will seat up to four guests. Bedrooms Two and Three are upstairs. Bedroom two has a king size bed with plenty of storage space, while Bedroom 3 can be configured as a twin or king-size bedroom.
Like every other cottage in this corner of St. Ives, there is space outside for dropping off passengers and luggage, while the nearest carpark is a pleasant 10-minute walk to the Island Carpark (£7.50 a day). A private parking space close by can be purchased in advance at £20 a day. Please enquire about this when booking.
Access to the Porthmeor beach is via a small private tunnel from the patio garden at the rear of the house that opens right on to the sands. Being in the heart of St. Ives, just about everything from the harbour to the Tate Gallery is within a short walking distance.
