Perched above Ullswater, widely considered the most beautiful of all the Lake District lakes, Cockley Moor Cottage is a wonderful Lake District holiday home benefitting from stunning views and spacious, modern accommodation for up to six guests and two dogs.
Set high up above Ullswater on the moorland of Matterdale Common, Cockley Moor Cottage is a wonderful house with interesting history, elegant decor, and breathtaking mountain views. Once the servant's quarters of Cockley Moor, previously the highest inhabited house of the Lake District, it has been a meeting place for art and science, drawing noted artists, poets, and astronomers to its doors.
Downstairs you will find plenty of socialising space with a lounge - with large windows to make the most of the views - a snug, sunroom, utility room, and kitchen-cum-dining room. The first floor has two double bedrooms, a twin room, a family bathroom with over-bath shower, and a separate shower room. Outside you will find a landscaped garden, raised patio, and private parking for up to three cars. Cockley Moor Cottage also benefits from WiFi (limited due to the rural area), Sky TV, and a lovely open fire.
Two miles from the cottage is wonderful Ullswater, which affords hundreds of walking and cycling opportunities as well as plenty of places to eat and chances to get out on the water. Imposing Helvellyn, England's third highest mountain, and the High Street range tower over the lake. Alternatively, there is easier walking to be had along the lakeshores and up to the beautiful Aira Force waterfall.
If you would like a relaxing time on the water, take a cruise on one of the stately Steamers across the lake, stopping off at any of the jetties on the way. Why not head out for a walk to one of the jetties and catch about back to your starting spot, enjoying the on-board bar while you're at it!?
For those hunting out some adventure, Rookin House activity centre is a 5-minute drive away and offers all sorts of options from horse riding to quad biking and from go karting to archery.
Short drives in opposite directions will also take you to the market towns of Keswick and Penrith with their independent shops, traditional buildings, and markets, as well as a good choice of other attractions. Stately homes such as Dalemain, Hutton-in-the-Forest and Lowther Castle are within easy reach for any history buffs.
