Nestling in a wooded North Devon Valley, 3-mins walk to the beach, Melinda’s Cottage, is a family-friendly 2-bedroom Grade-II listed holiday cottage on the coast in Bucks Mills. Melinda’s Cottage lies in a tranquil rural location, ideal for exploring North Devon and North Cornwall.
- Sleeps 4
- Bedrooms 2
- Bathrooms 1
A sympathetically restored almost 200-year old Grade II-listed fishermen’s cottage, Melinda’s Cottage nestles above a chuckling stream in the heart of a wooded valley in Bucks Mills, a tiny rural village on the North Devon coast. This quaint, family-friendly holiday cottage sleeps 4 in 2 bedrooms just a few minutes walk from the beach. Buck’s Mills, being at the end of a no through road which stops where the Atlantic starts, means it lies in a peaceful secluded location where passing walkers are the more likely order of the day than cars.
Melinda’s Cottage offers self catering holidays of seven days or more and short breaks, out of season and at short notice (min. 2 nights).
Accommodation in this charming traditional Devon cottage comprises:
- Sitting room with satellite TV, sofa, armchair and dining table seating 4. A high chair is provided.
- All electric, fitted kitchen with oven, washer-dryer, microwave, kettle, etc. radio and a selection of traditional games.
- Double bedroom with King-size bed.
Twin bedroom with adult size bunk beds
Melinda’s Cottage has a pretty garden to the front with lawn and shrubs plus picnic table and bench and flower bed in front of the cottage. The cottage is reached by a small stone bridge over a stream rushing to complete its journey to the sea. It also has that rarity in the village – a parking space right outside!
Bucks Mills is about a 2-mile walk along the Coast Path to the historic village of Clovelly and indeed, is somewhat like it but with none of the crowds, not so many houses and no steep hill to contend with as you walk through the village itself. You can enjoy some beautiful scenic walks along the coast path westwards to Clovelly, or eastwards towards Bideford along a coast with tiny coves and rocky shores to Peppercombe Beach.
The Beach at Bucks Mills has a small stretch of sand as the tide ebbs away, with plenty of opportunities for rock-pooling, paddling and swimming. When the wind blows in the right direction it also has some decent waves for surfing.
Further afield, Melinda’s Cottage is nicely located for forays into Cornwall and resorts such as Bude and Tintagel. To the west are the lovely sandy beaches of Westward Ho! and Northam Burrows as well as the quaint fishermen’s village of Appledore. Children can be royally entertained (you may have to drag them away) at two local theme ‘farm parks’, The Big Sheep and The Milky Way, offering opportunities to feed lambs, pet pigs and watch the cows being milked in between trips on a roller coaster, chair o’ plane and other delights. For the grown-ups, the Royal Horticultural Society’s Rosemore Gardens is well worth a visit (children catered for too) combined with a visit to Dartington Crystal to watch glass-blowers at work.
The ancient port of Bideford has all the main shops and services you may require including a Morrison’s and Asda supermarket. It’s also an embarkation point for boat trips to Lundy Island and evening coastal cruises. There is a village shop about a mile outside the village and a historic thatched pub, The Hoops Inn just a few minutes drive or an evening stroll along the coast path.
Bed linen and towels are not included but can be provided at £40 per week for 4 guests if required.
All utility services including heating are included in the price.
We regret that we are unable to accept pets.
We are pleased to offer recent visitors to Melinda's Cottage a 10% discount off these prices (complete weeks only).

A REALLY, REALLY GOOD HOLIDAY AT MELINDA'S by William and Judith, Glastonbury, 16-23 September 2017 on September 29th 2017
Really, really good holiday back in the cottage for the first time since 2005. We will return to Somerset relaxed and bronzed after several long coastal walks including to Clovelly and Hartland Bay via Docton Mill and Spekes Mill Mouth. Plenty of time to potter on the beach and read on two wet afternoons. Had a good lunch at The Hoops and a delicious evening meal at the Pattard Kitchen north of Hartland which has just opened recently. We can also recommend ‘the fishman’ who lives in Higher Clovelly. Rang him on Thursday evening and collected two fresh-cooked succulent lobsters on Thursday. Thank you for letting us rent your lovely cottage again.
A PERFECT WALKING HOLIDAY by 2-9th September 2017 on September 29th 2017
Stunning location! We were very lucky with the weather, a few showers but plenty of sunshine too. Beautiful walks with incredible views. The cottage is just right for a walking holiday.
CRABBING, WAKEBOARDING AND CHIPS! by Jasper Stevens, 26 August-2 September 2017 on September 29th 2017
A lovely cottage and a lovely beach and a really sunny week. We went body boarding at Westward Ho!, crabbing and eating fish and chips in Appledore, wake boarding at the Milky Way and prawning in Bucks Mills.
Sunshine and ice cream all the way! by Lucy Ferrier on August 26th 2017
Another fantastic week in Bucks Mills. We arrived in lovely sunshine and had 3 days of blue skies. Caught lots of prawns in the rock pools, had some great walks and a few meals at The Hoops Inn is as good as always, and nice to be able to walk there. Also had a lovely walk from downstream to Clovelly and back before an ice cream stop. Great fun and back next year!
