The Chapel @ Pickwell Manor
A 16th-Century private chapel for Pickwell Manor, it is now a cosy North Devon holiday cottage for couples above Putsborough Beach. The intimate interior is a romantic bolthole that pays tribute to classic camper-van life, albeit with far more facilities than you would ever find on 4-wheels.

The Chapel is a delightful cottage getaway for two on the North Devon coast. It’s a gentle scenic walk across fields from The Chapel down to the sandy beach at Putsborough and the rugged headland at Baggy Point. Once a place of prayer for the Lord and Lady of the Manor since the 16th Century, this idyllic and sensitively refurbished holiday cottage retains a spiritual feel while embracing modern standards of living. From its nicely preserved historic exterior, step inside The Chapel to a cosy but well-equipped and very comfortable romantic escape. The Chapel sleeps two only, meaning that we are unable to accommodate children, babies or pets.
Downstairs the camper van inspired kitchen diner spaces has an adjoining wet room with double shower. The kitchen, with hand-made units includes a small fridge-freezer, two-ring hob and double oven together with smaller appliances such as a toaster. Guests enjoy access to the nearby laundry room containing washing machines and tumble drier.
The double bedroom is upstairs, reached by narrow, slightly ladder-like stairs – great fun to use, but perhaps not entirely suitable for the inform and those who would rather avoid having to use stairs. Outside is a private decked area complete with relaxing furniture, hammock and fairy lights making it a perfect to spot for some relaxation with a glass of wine surrounded by peaceful Devon countryside and the distance murmer of the waves. Additional facilities include a BBQ area, 6 acres of garden, games room and a tennis court.
There’s a handy bike store for items such as surf-boards and bicycles – both of which will find plenty of use, given the proximity to The Tarka Trail, a long-distance cycle path and the surfing beaches of Putsborough, Woolacombe and Croyde. It’s also a great location for coastal walks- whether along the sands to Woolacombe, or a circuit of Baggy Point and Mortepoint, two rugged headlands jutting out into the Atlantic.
Pickwell Manor lies within an easy reach of other superb North Devon beaches such as Croyde and Saunton Sands as well as the Victorian seaside resort of Ilfracombe. Day trips to explore the Exmoor National Park or by boat from Ilfracombe or Bideford to Lundy Island – a two-hour cruise out into the Atlantic are a few of the many appealing attractions within easy reach of The Chapel at Pickwell Manor in North Devon.
