We bought Lantern House in November 2007, as a family holiday home and have set the house up with friends and families in mind. We hope guests find Lantern House to be comfortable, relaxing and well equipped for a variety of ages.
Groups, families and pets are welcomed but the house is non-smoking and we would not recommend the house to people who struggle with the stairs as there are steps down into the house and the living quarters are on all levels of the four storey property.
With 6 bedrooms Lantern House comfortably sleeps 12 people with the 3 main double rooms enjoying spectacular sea and harbour views.
There are two large sitting rooms, the "grown up" living room is situated on the first floor with large features windows looking out to sea and the "den" is on the ground floor and kitted out for fun, with a pool table, wii and playstation, toys, games and books and access to the private, enclosed garden.
Next door to Lantern House we have the Coach House, which is set up for you to park 3 to 4 cars safely and securely. The Coach House also houses our table tennis table - great for a wet weather afternoon.
Lantern House was built in 1826 for a Sea Captain’s Widow, so that she would be able to sit and look out to sea, where she lost her dearly beloved.
Lantern House is named such because of the fantastic view of Lantern Hill and St Nicholas’ Chapel – the oldest working beacon in the British Isles.
The house is a classic example of Regency architecture. You will notice the distinctive period features throughout the house.
The cantilever staircase is an engineering feat and has been admired by architects and structural engineers.
Coronation Terrace is one of the oldest and was one of the grandest streets in Ilfracombe. Lantern House was built as a residence and the rest of the terrace included The Assembly Rooms and the Masonic Lodge. In its heyday, Coronation Terrace had a smart promenade that ran the length of the terrace , where the back gardens are now, so the back of the properties were in fact the front.
Ilfracombe is the perfect location to be based for a wonderful North Devon holiday. Ilfracombe offers award winning beaches, stunning coastal scenery and old fashioned Victorian charm, on the edge of the Exmoor National Park and only a 15 minute drive away from the golden sands and surf of the famous Woolacombe and Croyde surfing beaches.
