A cosy eco-lodge in idyllic rural Devon, Nuthatch Lodge offers dog-friendly self-catering holidays for a family of 4. Borrow bikes, BBQ and toast marshmallows at a campfire, boat on the lake, and explore the Wheatland Farm nature reserve. Or strike out to explore the North Devon beaches or Dartmoor.
Lovely Nuthatch Lodge's glass sliding doors take you straight out into a meadow with views towards Dartmoor. Trees on three sides give you privacy and bring the birdsong to your doorstep (and the nuthatches to the veranda bird feeder). Nuthatch Lodge’s cosy but comfortable interior offers much more space than most glamping pods, with separate double and bunk rooms, a bathroom with short bath (good for young kids) and over bath shower. The main living area is open plan with a fully-equipped kitchen (oven, hob, full-size fridge freezer, microwave etc), dining table, sofa, and flat screen TV. There's WiFi too, if you want to keep a channel open to the outside world. But you might find you’re happier just switching off.
Sleeping 4, the lodge isn’t huge is cosy, but there’s still plenty of room to swing a cat. Don’t do that though – this 21 acre farm is managed for wildlife (and your stay helps make that possible). That's not the only way yours is a green holiday though – all your power is renewable, mostly from the on-site wind turbine, and your hot water is solar (with immersion backup!). Almost everything can be recycled (you might even be surprised by some of the quirky upcycling you find in this self catering lodge. You can even have a car free holiday, complete with days out, if you're up for the challenge. Owners Ian and Maggie will collect you from bus or station, set you up with bikes, and help you work out an itinerary that fits public transport. But the bikes are also available for everyone, and kids especially love to bike around the farm. You can BBQ or have a campfire, explore Wheatland Farm’s 21 acres (or take a free guided tour) and even go for a paddle on the pond. Up to 2 well-behaved dogs are welcome, and Devon, of course, is blessed with charming traditional pubs (many of them dog friendly) offering oodles of character and good local food.
Nuthatch Lodge at Wheatland Farm is near Winkleigh, deep in agricultural Devon, but well placed to explore north to the coast and beaches or south to Dartmoor’s National Park. If this isn't an area you know well, tap into the extensively researched 'things to do' list, borrow maps and get tips from the owners. In summer, families often find new like-minded friends in the other lodges. Off peak, couples and singles will find a genuinely peaceful rural retreat. And even when full, Wheatland Farm has an exclusive 'hidden gem' feel - you're always assured of genuine personal customer service.
