Recently-renovated Otter Cottage at Wheatland Farm has a cosy open plan downstairs with wood burner, flat screen TV and fully-equipped kitchen. A stable door opens onto a sunny terrace and private garden with views over the fishing pond. Upstairs, the double room has far-reaching views over both fishing and wildlife ponds, all the way to Dartmoor. There’s also a twin room and bathroom with bath and over-bath shower. You’ll find upcycled style throughout, including hand-made fittings crafted from recycled and reclaimed wood.
Otter Cottage is popular with couples and singles because the wood burner adds the perfect cosy touch to off-peak breaks, but if you don’t want the hassle of lighting a wood fire, don’t worry - there are electric radiators.
And fabulous local Devon food is easy to find too. There are plenty of good pubs nearby (the nearest is only 2 miles away – you could even borrow a free bike to get there). Or you can have groceries delivered, whether from the farm shop up the road, a local online grocer or wine merchant.
Beyond your garden, you’ve got 21 acres of farmland managed for wildlife to explore - it’s your stay that helps pay for the farm to be managed as a nature reserve. Otter Cottage is named after the otter seen pilfering the pond one morning, though you’re more likely to see the kingfisher, the resident moorhen family, or perhaps a barn owl drifting over the fields at dusk.
Well-trained dogs (max 2 in this cottage) are welcome and there are plenty of nearby walks. The owners live on site and are always happy to help, whether with ideas for places to go or just with local knowledge. Otter Cottage offers a genuinely green Devon holiday – all your electricity is renewable (most generated on the farm) and your recycling is taken care of. Bikes, boats, BBQs are all free, and you can even take a free guided wildlife walk around this award-winning farm.
