Property Details

North Lake Chapel sits in the centre of Devon, with the quaint and sleepy little villages of Morchard Bishop and Witheridge about a ten-minute drive away. North Lake Chapel is a large holiday cottage created from a contemporary conversion of a former Methodist chapel, famous for being the highest house in Devon.

Taking advantage of the location, the property has been designed and converted to make the most of the views with Exmoor to the north and Dartmoor to the south. The location is ideal if you love the county of Devon with a range of fantastic country towns and villages nearby. If you want to leave the car at home, catch a Tarka Line train at nearby Morchard Road which will give you a scenic ride to Exeter and Exmouth in one direction and Barnstaple in the other – as well as delightful stops in villages with excellent pubs and country walks. The nearby rural farming villages of Chulmleigh and Winkleigh both offer a taste of the real Devon. There are numerous welcoming pubs with restaurants in the area, all offering great food, real ales and ciders and the true Devon hospitality.

As a modern conversion of a former chapel, North Lake Chapel is a great Devon holiday home if you are looking for something that is unique and an experience within itself. The property has been designed to maximise the advantage of the views in an upside-down style. On the first floor, there is the open plan dining area, kitchen and living area, all set beneath the pretty and ornate wooden ceiling that is lit by lanterns, with period archway windows to the side. This is a beautiful room and a credit to the owners, retaining the period features, maximising the use of light, resulting in a functional and contemporary space.

The living room has two sofas that seat five people, two matching armchairs and a flame effect electric fire with remote control. There is a modern flat screen wall mounted TV that has Freeview as well as an iPod docking station, books and a selection of DVDs. There is an additional recreation room that has a flat screen TV and two armchairs. The stunning views are enhanced from the balcony, accessed through the living room and are far-reaching over the Devon countryside.

To the rear of the living area, the dining area has a large, rectangular solid wood table with comfortable leather chairs that seat up to 8 people. To the side of the dining area is the modern open plan kitchen, complete with an electric oven and induction hob. All cooking appliances are included in the kitchen such as an integrated dishwasher and fridge freezer. The washer dryer is in the utility room on the ground floor.

There are four unique bedrooms at North Lake Chapel comprising:

  • A double bedroom on the ground floor of the former chapel. This incorporates beautiful wood flooring. As well as a king-size bed and a double wardrobe, there are double doors that lead to the outside area. There is an en-suite to this bedroom that has a WC, wash hand basin, bidet and a shower cubicle.

  • The Barn bedroom, a double room, is in the new part of the building attached to the old chapel. Again, with wood flooring, this room has its own separate dressing room and an en-suite bathroom. This is a huge master bedroom, plenty of space and a super king-size bed and its own large flat screen TV. There is also a small nursery room with a travel cot, ideal for parents that want to stay close to their young children or babies.

  • Two bedrooms on the ground floor, one with a king-size bed and one with twin beds and both share wardrobes in the hallway. Both these bedrooms have double doors that lead outside.

Externally, there is a large gravelled area with plenty of parking space and the property is surrounded by farmland and fields with uninterrupted views throughout.

If you love unique conversions of period properties and are looking for a large rural holiday home in the heart of Devon that sleeps up to 8 people, North Lake Chapel has everything to offer. Beautifully converted, modern but with bags of character, in a peaceful village location and yet ideal for exploring both Exmoor and Dartmoor as well as Devon’s north and south coast resorts, North Lake Chapel is unusual and unique and ideal for families.

We booked North Lake Chapel for a family celebration andnbfound it an ideal property. With the open plan living upstairs we were able to be together whether cooking or relaxing. The welcome pack was most welcome and we thoroughly enjoyed the local produce - thank you. We enjoyed some fantastic sunsets and stars and planets were spectacular. Overall we had a most enjoyable stay.
