Having arrived...... We’re in!!! What an amazing place! We all love it! Only problem is we don’t want to go out anywhere as we want to spend time in here!! Having left....... We had an amazing weekend, the wedding was lovely. We would definitely like to stay again - will have to look at dates, and will be recommending it to friends.

Midway up the beautiful Gold Hill in Shaftesbury close to the Somerset and Wiltshire borders in Dorset, Updown Cottage offers luxury self catering holidays for 2-6 guests in 4 bedrooms. The Cottage has a 5-star gold award rating from Visit Britain and is indeed a very comfortable and characterful place in which to enjoy a holiday exploring the coast and countryside of this rural corner of the West Country.
The cottage offers far reaching views of the countryside over the Blackmoor Vale, often referred to as Thomas Hardy's Vale of Little Dairies. It lies opposite stout walls of the wonderful 9th Century Shaftesbury Abbey, on the street made famous in the 1970s by Ridley Scott's Hovis advert, featuring a baker's boy on a bicycle and is often used as a film location.
The 16th Century holiday cottage features original, ancient beams in every room, blending historic character with stylish modern living, incorporating every modern convenience. Central heating and a woodburning stove will keep you warm and cosy in winter, while its thick stone walls keep it cool indoors in the heat of the summer.
Sleeping up to six guests in its 4 bedrooms (plus cot) with 3 bathrooms or shower rooms, means no queues for the loos, Downstairs there are 2 sitting rooms (one with a baby grand piano), a separate dining room with seating for 12 (in case you wish to invite friends for dinner), and a well-equipped kitchen.
The price includes WiFi, national landline calls, a welcome pack of groceries for your first tea-time and breakfast (including 36 Nespresso capsules), Bramley all natural toiletries, bathrobes, piles of towels, White Company bed linen and a basket of logs.
It's the perfect place for a romantic escape, musicians seeking inspiration or somewhere to practice while on holiday or families looking for somewhere full of character in which to relax while exploring the towns, villages, Jurassic coast beaches and other attractions of Dorset, Somerset and WIltshire. It's an easy drive further afield for day trips to Bath and The Cotswolds to the north, Stonehenge and Salisbury to the east and Devon and Dartmoor to the west.

Happy to stay in!

Just to say thanks again – we had such a brilliant time. The cottage is so lovely we would have been happy never straying from the door – though we did go for some great walks, and for some very good meals.
Best service ever

I must say thank you again for such a superb friendly service, and attention to detail. We have been renting holiday cottages for about 25 years, a couple of times a year, and I would say this is the best service ever and a very special place! I guess the immediacy and convenience of modern day technology helps with communication, but it's certainly not the general rule to be so well cared for! We have had our eye on Updown for some time and decided we had to book it for our 40th wedding anniversary! Certainly we would book again!

I love this ancient, wonky, beautiful house!
Didn't want to leave
February 9th 2018
We had a lovely time and really didn't want to leave so hopefully will be back at some point. It was our first time going for the self-catering option and feel this one will be hard to beat!

This is a fabulous and incredibly charming cottage on Gold Hill! We fell in love with it the moment we stepped through the front door. Comfortable and cozy -- you feel like you have stepped into the eighteenth century, except for the modern amenities like marvelous baths and a comfortable, well stocked kitchen. The welcome basket of essential foodstuffs were much appreciated by these tired travelers -- especially at breakfast the next morning! Nothing but great things to say about Uptown Cottage and the town of Shaftesbury!

Unwound and relaxed
November 24th 2014
I just wanted to drop you a note to say thank you. I literally cannot remember the last time I unwound and relaxed as well as I have over the last few days. The cottage is beautiful and lighting a fire at the end of the day was fabulous. We loved Shaftesbury and Turnbull`s was yummy! We have left some comments in the book and posted numerous pictures on Facebook!! As a matter of interest how far in advance does the cottage get booked for Christmas? It would be heavenly to be here.
