The comfort, cleanliness and location of the property is outstanding. The views from every window are breath-taking. The walk-in modern power-shower was much appreciated by all of us, especially the three teenage grand-daughters! The cottage is a pleasure to return to after a day out. We would not hesitate to re-book another holiday here as it is truly one of the best properties we have ever stayed in.

The cottage was well equipped and comfortable. We loved the beautiful countryside setting it was so relaxing to sit in the garden and enjoy the panoramic views and listen to the sound of bird song.
by Mr Edmondson on April 24th 2016
I feel the three star rating of the property is misleading as we have stayed in a number of 4 star rated properties that are not as good as this! The property is excellent and the owners warm and welcoming. The views from the gardens and the conservatory are wonderful. The cottage is an ideal base for visiting a beautiful and interesting area of our country.
by Mrs Ellershaw on March 20th 2016
This is a beautiful cottage and should be rated as 4 star not 3 star. We had a lovely and comfortable holiday. The views from the cottage were fantastic. My two little dogs made themselves at home as soon as we got into the cottage. The fenced off garden was brilliant. The owners could not have been any more friendly and helpful.

The cottage was beautiful, the owners friendly, helpful but not intrusive. The log fire was particularly appreciated to add to the cosiness on a November evening. Blissfully comfortable by Diane D on August 31st 2013
The cottage was blissfully comfortable, quiet, relaxing and spotlessly clean. The cottage was stocked with everything we could need for a family of 3 for a week, including washing machine, dishwasher, wi-fi and crockery. The owners live in the cottage next door but are in no way intrusive - they are very friendly and welcoming and are on-tap if anything is needed. It is also a great location - very quiet with fantastic views but with easy access of many family friendly activites. This week we have; visited Beamish Museum (twice), Gibside (National Trust property and gardens), Durham, Newcastle, Druridge Bay (beautiful, clean, quiet beach) and had a boat ride on the Tyne. We have had a wonderful week and will definitely stay at Granary Cottage again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Lots of leaflets with local attractions and some good reading material The coutryside location was perfect for us with our dog. Superb. Much more than expected by gyplob on November 5th 2010
It was a joy to get 'home' to this beautiful cottage and its surroundings after long days out and about. Breakfast in the conservatory was a pleasure watching the birds and horses; but the evenings relaxing were the best. Myself and two friends had promised ourselves trips up to the local, or out for a meal each night, but the cottage was so cosy and comfortable, we didn't want to move - so just made our own meals in the fantastic kitchen - which had everything, and spent enjoyable evenings in the delightful sitting room watching TV, reading, writing or talking. So much thought has gone into the comfort of the visitors, that we couldn't fault a thing. Even hot water bottles in the superb large bedrooms and plenty of books for the adults and games for the children. As for the delightful owners - what can we say ? Thank you for the greeting on arrival, the bowl of fresh eggs in the kitchen. Your kindness and help throughout the week. We'll be back. Thats for sure !!
Very relaxing & friendly. by A FlipKey verified reviewer on November 5th 2010
A lovely clean and homily cottage in a lovely quiet location, with great views. Well equipped with a log fire. Little touches like having logs and rolled up paper available for the fire made all the difference. Would recommend and will probably be back ourselves one day.
Don't tell everybody - they will all want to come! by Michael on November 5th 2010

by Mrs Gadsby on November 1st 2010
Lovely cosy cottage, isolated but not remote, beautiful log fire, well situated for visiting Hadrian's Wall, Tees Valley, Newcastle and Durham City. Fantastic views from almost every room. Very friendly owner living next door.
by Mr Noble on October 25th 2010
It was excellent value and a very comfortable cottage. We were handy for Diggerland and Beamish which my grandson (OK we all) enjoyed. A particular asset was the owners horse and pony in the field and chickens in the yard. We were also allowed to take our dog with us. It exceeded our expectations.
Home from home in a great location by Mr Heath on October 20th 2010
We were made to feel very welcome, but at the same time the owners were not a bit intrusive whilst being there if needed. The cottage is very comfortable and well appointed. Nothing was missing and even the TV had a larger screen than usual with full freeview. The location is quiet without being isolated and there are many places to visit at all points of the compass. It is ideal for visiting Durham which we needed for our son's graduation day. Chrissie and Gavin have succeeded in making this a real home from home and we really look forward to coming again.
by Mrs Lobban on September 20th 2010
Coming 'home' to The Granary after a long day out... It was so comfortable and cosy - all three ladies were so sorry to leave it to come back home. Our hosts were the nicest, kindest couple. Even a welcome dish of fresh eggs awaited us. I could go on, but there is no other word other than fabulous. Even this is not sufficient. Not sure of the Tourist Board Star Grade, but it deserves the highest, plus distinction.
by Mr Thistleton on September 14th 2010
A lovely clean, warm and comfortable cottage which made it easy to relax in. Very friendly and helpful owners but not intrusive. Peaceful and beautiful setting with lots of attractions in the surrounding area to visit.

Cosy, comfortable and welcoming cottage near Durham by Tina on January 18th 2010
Very warm welcome from the adjacent owner, but not intrusive. Lovely house, very well equipped and clean. Large kitchen with dining area. Fantastic open fire with a constant, plentiful supply of logs. Could have spent the week indoors doing jigsaws and playing games, but there was lots to explore in the area. Lanchester had sufficient shops for us, plus a good Italian restaurant. Durham within easy reach. Well positioned for exploring Northumberland - Hadrian's wall, Killhope Lead mines & Souter lighthouse were all excellent. Would definitely stay again. Only drawback (minr) was the need to drive everywhere.
by Mr Bloomfield on January 4th 2010
The friendliness of the hosts, the wonderful position of the cottage, the wonderful open fire and abundance of fuel for it. It was perfect. I just wish that I didn't want to praise this cottage and couple so highly as it may make it more difficult to book this cottage next time!!
good base for visiting Durham and beautiful countryside around by A FlipKey verified reviewer on December 18th 2009
We have stayed in this cottage three times while our son was at Durham University. It provides a peaceful base and in winter the log fire makes it a cosy retreat. There are lovely views from the triple aspect sitting room. The owners are very kind and helpful. The cottage is nicely furnished and the beds are comfortable. There is ample linen and towels. The only downside is that there is only one WC which is in the bathroom and there is no dishwasher. The surrounding countryside is lovely and quite undiscovered and there is much to see and do - the cities of Durham and Newcastle, roman sites, castles, industrial heritage, walks and the coast.
Highly recommended by A FlipKey verified reviewer on December 7th 2009

by Mr & Mrs Lilburn on January 25th 2006
The hosts were welcoming and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The cottage was a true home from home. The hosts went to the effort of putting up a Christmas tree and decorations to ensure that our Christmas in England was a warm and homely one. I could quite easily live there full time! Full marks to a cottage (and hosts) that I would happily recommend to anyone.

An immensely kind and thoughtful welcome. The hosts are always very helpful. This was in the middle of a cold February and a log fire had been laid and the cottage was already warm when we arrived. The cottage is very well stocked with all the necessities for a comfotable and happy stay and, while retaining a traditonal feel, is up to date with all its equipment and decor. There are lovely views from most windows and a very nice conservatory(with heating!). The property is quiet and secluded yet within an easy drive of good pubs and many local attractions. Young children catered for at the cottage. The cottage is an excellent retreat from a "hectic life" but also a wonderful base to explore from.
by Mr Griggs on December 16th 2004
There are plenty of walks with our dog around the area without going too far out. The Brown Horse pub let us take our dog into the bar for food, but the Punch Bowl @Satley will not let dogs in. Plenty of space for us and our son and daughter in law along with their 10 year old son.
