CHIRNSIDE

Duns 6 miles; Berwick-upon-Tweed 9 miles.

The village of Chirnside occupies an elevated position overlooking the River Whiteadder and offers stunning views across the magnificent Cheviot and Lammermuir Hills. A number of interesting landmarks depict the village's long history, including a 16th Century dovecot and a beautiful parish church, believed to date back to the 12th Century. Each summer, the Jim Clark Rally, the only 'closed roads' race on mainland Britain, takes place in and around the Borders as a memorial to the village’s home born champion.

Just 9 miles away lies the charming, coastal town of Berwick, boasting quaint, narrow streets enclosed within Elizabethan walls, excellent shopping and dining facilities and an interesting arts centre. The local area affords fantastic fishing, golf, walking and riding opportunities and the nearby resorts of Eyemouth, Coldingham and Spittal offer soft, sandy beaches, ideal for a relaxing afternoon. A brilliant location for exploring historic Edinburgh, the stunning Northumberland coastline, and the attractions of Holy Island, Paxton House, Manderson, Bamburgh and Alnwick Castle. Chirnside is a great holiday location all year round.Duns 6 miles; Berwick-upon-Tweed 9 miles.

We wanted to 'get away from it all' and this cottage was great. It is set in woodland, but with good access to all the major visitor areas. This has been a very relaxed and enjoyable holiday.

Warm welcome and beautiful setting made for a wonderful stay by 101SharonM101 on June 17th 2014

Exceptional Value for Money. Whilst not the swankiest of pads, the cottage is scrupiously clean and very well equipped, set in beautiful grounds with lots of wildlife. There is also space for two cars for each of the cottages, which is great if you are meeting up with friends or family. We got the warmest of welcomes from our host, Liz, who even left us a chocolate cake - despite this being only a three night booking. We had our jack russell dog with us, so it was also really handy to have a fenced-in patio area so I didn't have to worry about him reducing the abundance of wildlife. Liz sent us great directions and was on-hand to answer any questions we might have. Our first time to Coldingham Bay, which is only a short drive away - recommended by Liz; one very much appreciated as it was amazing with rockpools, a lovely sandy beach, free parking and fab walks. Would highly recommend a stay at this property.

Convenient for visiting places of interest. The cottage was well presented and we were made welcome. The owner made herself known to us and asked if everything was OK.

Peaceful by A FlipKey verified reviewer on October 26th 2013

Loved Gardner's Cottage. Went with husband and Luna the dog. Small enclosed patio with bbq was a great place to sit in the evenings. Little patch of woodland over fence for Luna to run. Nice and roomy cottage which is well equipped. Steps up to front door. There are now two bathrooms. Bit of a drive for shops (Tesco near Berwick). Nice pub with food in village. Owners friendly and helpful. It is on the site of their art studio, which had an open weekend while we were there, so there were people walking around, but only until 4pm. Had to stand in garden for phone reception. Beautiful garden, and situation. Well recommended and would go again.

An ideal base for touring the Scottish border regions. The cottage was very well equipped and very comfortable. It was ideally situated, with excellent parking for vehicles. Would recommend this very nice cottage to anyone who likes a quiet holiday.

Lovely, peaceful accommodation. Owner friendly and helpful. Very comfortable. We plan to return.

It was a shame to go out for the day! by Chrissy C on August 10th 2013

What a lovely cottage (in the ad photos, its the one in shadow). Spacious and dog friendly. Well equipped kitchen. Comfortable living area (though we mainly sat on the patio). Surrounded by trees. Patio is enclosed by low fence. Over road from property is a footpath suitable for walking the dog in the mornings. Lots of space in the bedrooms and two bathrooms, one with shower one with bath. There is an ajoining cottage but you don't get any disturbance from it. There is also another property visible and the owner runs art courses, none of which is troublesome. Only downside - no shops for miles. But very nice pub - Allanton Arms(?) down the road. Owners very friendly. Mobile phone(text)/tablet reception outside - sometimes in the trees. Mobile phone calls on the road, outside the property. Steps leading upto property and narrow staircase - not suitable for wheelchairs or disabled. Great for visiting Lindisfarne, St. Abbs Head, Southern Upland Way.

The cottage was in a lovely setting ,not too far from shop. The owner was very helpful and attentive.

It was the most relaxing holiday. The cottage was very comfortable and very well equipped. It was also nicely situated in the grounds of the big house. Off road parking was very good, with plenty of room.

Gardener's Cottage has a warm welcoming feel to it. It is an ideal base for exploring the Borders area. We liked the welcoming touches - fresh flowers and cake. Particularly liked the woodland setting, the comfy sofas, the two bathrooms and the well equipped kitchen. Also appreciated the high quality crockery and kitchen utensils.

A fabulous hide-away holiday. The place was beautiful and the patio was a real sun catcher. The chocolate cake was a nice gesture to be greeted with. Overall a really lovely haven to explore the area.

by Miss Griffiths on February 19th 2012

How warm, cosy and friendly the cottage was. The grounds were nice and the location was nice and quiet. Good walks on your door step for the dog. The lovely bunch of fresh roses on the table to greet us. No notices telling you not to do things was a very positive feature.

a relaxing holiday at your own pace by A FlipKey verified reviewer on January 5th 2012

An excellent very comfortable cottage with all the facilities needed for a quiet get away from it all holiday, great walks and for an evening out for great food you must visit the nearby allanton inn.Our hosts were helpful without being intrusive. It may be off the beaten track but our sat nav found it no problem . All in all a very relaxing time which is what we wanted ,already thinking of going back

Value for money by A FlipKey verified reviewer on October 21st 2011

Potentially this is a good cottage. It's in a tranquil location but handy for touring the local area. It is a warm little cottage when the heaters are on but the hot water system needs reworking because it is lacking. The kitchen is quite well equipped but there aren't many mugs but the cupboards are far too high off the floor. The bed was comfy despite being 2 joined together. Loved the ensuite. Would go there again.

Peaceful position by A FlipKey verified reviewer on September 16th 2011

Gardeners Cottage is surrounded by country lanes but civilisation if you want it is not far away. The cottage itself is in need of a makeover as its starting to look a bit tired around the edges and if this were done the cost would go up,as prices are reasonable now. The owners who lived in the ground s didnt bother you and just gave you the key on arrival .I feel a bit more effort could have been made with the presentation of the place as I said Id have a word with the cleaner who has nt cleaned in the corners for a few weeks! On the whole if you want somewhere to lay your head for the week near to Holy island its cheap and cheerfull.

by Mrs Mitchell on July 18th 2011

Unspoiled beaches. Once in your cottage no one bothered you. There were no notices up in the property saying don't do this or don't do that which was refreshing. The grounds where the cottage stood were lovely.

by Mrs Woods on September 21st 2010

Our visit was a spur of the moment decision and we couldn't have picked a better place to stay. I would recommend this cottage to anyone who wants a holiday in this area. The cottage itself was warm, freshly decorated and was fitted out extremely well. The owners were friendly and approachable. A lovely place to stay all round!
