In the county of Gwynedd, Wales lies the sweet village of Maentwrog. A beautiful place to rent a holiday home, Maentwrog falls within the Snowdonia National Park, with the River Dwyryd flowing by the village bounds. Surrounded by stunning landscape, Maentrwrog lies in the Vale of Ffestiniog, with the breath-taking Blaenall Ffestiniog above it. Visit one of two cosy village pubs: the Oakeley Arms, or the listed 17th century building of The Grapes. Relax with a cool pint, and take in the local atmosphere – or perhaps you will be resting your weary feet after a day of exploring the nearby Coedydd Maentwrog forest. The woods stretch all the way from the Porthmadog Coast to the Blaenau Ffestiniog, and, being a National Nature Reserve, makes for a beautiful, romantic day out with your love done. Knowing you have your very own holiday home back at the village means you’re free to explore well.

Translated, ’Maentwrog’ means ’Twrog’s Stone’. Why? Well, legend has it that Twrog was a giant who threw a rock from the top of a hill onto the village. Should you touch this rock, it is believed you will return to the village once more. However, should you decide to stray from the village during your stay, then Portmeirion is the perfect choice, being only five miles away. Situated on the coast, this would make for a perfect day out with the kids, with free guided tours and plenty of quaint shops and cafes to spend time in. Wander through the town and take in the unique mix of Tudor, Chinese and Italian-inspired architecture, not forgetting to later hop on a heritage train at Ffestiniog Railway. Here, you can take in the stunning scenery with style.

Return to your holdiay cottage for the evening where you can enjoy the local Maentwrog produce that you perhaps bought earlier in the day, and get the kids ready for another adventure tomorrow – a trip to the Llechwedd Slate Caverns, for an underground mining tour and outdoor play area (including zip-wires!). An ideal place for a holiday cottage, the serene village of Maentwrog is perfect for both families and couples.
