Herefordshire lies on the beautiful Welsh borders. The county is home to some of the most breathtaking countryside, making it a marvellous destination for a rented holiday cottage. Herefordshire’s centre is the city of  Hereford dating back to Saxon times with its striking medieval cathedral – home to the world-famous ‘Mappa Mundi’. For a slightly different side of history, visit the Hereford Cider Museum – and keep an eye out for any cider-making festivals!

Further south, holidays in the Wye Valley towns of Ross-on-Wye and Symonds Yat offer a wide and irresistible range of riverside walks and canoeing trips, all amidst stunning scenery. Explore more of the towns themselves and find the unique little shops, such as  'Moor Fascinators and Hats' in Ross-on-Wye, and of course, 'Truffles Delicatessen'!

North Herefordshire is often known as ‘Mortimer Country’, after the writer John Mortimer, whose novels were often inspired by the local landscape. Here, you can find the small towns of Knighton and Leominster, with their charming, traditional timbered cottages, making it feel like you are walking through history. Cottage holidays in Knighton are particularly popular with visiting golf enthusiasts, while the intriguing Croft Castle and the grand Berrington Hall are close to holiday homes in Leominster. The town of Hay-on-Wye is famous for its international book festival and close to the fantastic Golden Valley. It offers idyllic riverside walks and breathtaking views of Black Mountain.

On the other hand, holiday lets in Ledbury and Bromyard, picturesque little towns to the east of the County, also provide easy access to the neighbouring county of Worcestershire. Not just a famous sauce, Worcestershire offers so much to do and see, such as the Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings, the beautiful city museum and art gallery, and Arrow Valley Country Park, ideal for a day trip with a picnic and the kids. Herefordshire is a beautiful rural county to visit if you want both nature and history to play a memorable part in your holiday.
