About the location:
THORNTON WATLASS | Masham 4 miles | Bedale 3 miles.
The pretty village of Thornton Watlass lies north of Masham and south of Bedale at the entrance to Wensleydale and the glorious Yorkshire Dales National Park. At the centre of the village is the triangular village green, with its trees, cricket pitch and children's playground, surrounded by houses, some of which are built from local stone. Thornton Watlass Church dates from the 11th century and the village also has a public house called the Buck Inn.
The nearby historic little market town of Masham is situated alongside the River Ure. Set in gently rolling farmland, the town boasts a huge market square, where a Wednesday market has recently been joined by a popular Saturday market.
There are lots of walks around the area, including a recently reopened 10 mile walk along the Ure, arguably one of the best walks in the UK. The town boasts a range of crafts, galleries, shops, restaurants and pubs, and is the home to the Black Sheep Brewery, which now brews 11 million pints of beer a year! The popular towns of Ripon and Harrogate are an easy drive away. With so much to see and do in the area, this is a great base in all seasons.

We spent a week at Millstone Cottage to base our selves for a week in the Yorkshire Dales. Very friendly owners, lovely countryside, more than enough to fill our week, which flew by. Miles of running and walking tracks and plenty of lovely food. Would recommend to anyone young or old.

Short Family Break by Paul F on February 13th 2013
We stayed 3 nights at Millstone Cottage. The party consisted of me and my partner and our 2 adult daughters who drove there separately (3 cars). We also had 2 dogs with us, one a large malamute puppy, We had a good break, with visits to Northallerton, Jervaux Abbey and Masham. Good walking and good food and drink - we went to the Bay Horse in Masham and the food was of a very high quality. The owners are a young couple with a small baby who live in the adjoining building and look after retired racehorses. Their relaxed and helpful/friendly attitude made the break even more enjoyable. The cottage is in a lovely village in a fine part of the country.

Fantastic, just the relaxing break we needed! by Eggberts on January 7th 2012
Our visit over the New Year break together with friends and our dachshund Bella co-insided with the birth of the owners first child. Congratulations again! You would think us visiting at such a time would be a great inconvenience but it was far from it. We could not have been made more welcome, meeting many members of the family and friends coming to meet the new addition. Visiting with a dog can sometimes be restrictive but even Bella was made to feel part of the family, playing with the resident dog and barking at the horses (who incidently couldn't care less). The cottage had everything we required except for wireless and a good phone signal but at the end of the day we were trying to get away from it all. Would highly recommend dining at the Buck Inn, literally 50 metres away. The food was delicious and I would agree with the menu that they do the best pub lasagne.
by Mrs Crooks on September 25th 2011
Our hosts were excellent when we arrived, they couldn't do enough for us. The whole cottage was a real delight. We took our grandson down to feed apples to the horses on their land. The cottage is in a gorgeous setting and really not far from anywhere. We all loved it very much!
by Mrs Bosworth on June 15th 2011
The location of the property was ideal, being central to the area we wished to visit. The cottage is attached to the owners' own house, with stabling in the yard for their horses, which made it a pleasant and interesting place to be. The owners themselves were exceptionally friendly and helpful.
by Mrs Painter on June 1st 2011
The owners made us very welcome, nothing was too much trouble and they were very friendly. The garden and paddock were readily available for our dog to use whenever we liked and outside seating and tables were there to be used (weather permitting). We felt very comfortable.
A perfect break !! by A FlipKey verified reviewer on January 4th 2011
The owners were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble. The cottage was very spacous, very clean, plenty of heating available along with lots of hot water. The area was very picturesque , even in November, very quiet but close enough to interesting / walking areas to be convenient. The environment was perfect for us with the lovely countryside, the horses on the site, the owners obvious love of animals, it was infact a real home from home and there was nothing we were either dissatisfied with or even slightly unhappy with.
by Mrs Turner on November 22nd 2010
The friendly welcoming the owners gave us and our dog, and their continual concern that things were ok for us. There was nothing we did not like; it was all lovely.
