The Oval, Dunster

Beautifully Furnished, 3-bedroom Coastal Cottage Near a Steam Railway and Historic Castle.

Our award-winning Somerset holiday cottage, ‘The Oval’, is the ideal place to stay while exploring Dunster and Exmoor. Centrally located within easy distance of all the village shops, pubs and restaurants, it was built in the winter of 1366, according to the TV’s Time Team specialists. As one of the oldest houses in Dunster, this cosy Exmoor holiday cottage has original cruck beams, oak screening, a stunning four-poster bed, wood burning stove, stone floors and many more fascinating features, as well as top-of-the-range mod cons. The Oval sleeps six in three bedrooms.

Downstairs you’ll find a comfortable sitting room with a wood-burning stove, a 50” smart TV with Netflix and DVD player; a large well-equipped kitchen, dining room and a well-stocked playroom/reading room, as well as a utility room that was probably once used to house a couple of animals in the winter! Outside there’s a pretty patio with seating and steps to the deck with beautiful views across the countryside. Upstairs you’ll find two double rooms with en-suites and a twin.

Wi-Fi. Central heating, bed linen, and towels are included. We are fortunate to have two reserved parking spaces nearby. Dogs are welcome.

We have shared the Oval with guests since 2010, and many return. We are proud that in 2018 The Oval won a Sykes Cottages Gem Award in the ‘Best Historical Property’ category.

The medieval village of Dunster is packed with exciting places, including the National Trust castle, a working water mill, the famous Gallox Bridge and an ancient dovecote. Add to that the stunning Yarn Market and today’s exciting range of independent shops and tea rooms, and you’ll be spoilt for choice!

You could go to Dunster for a week and find something fascinating to see or do every day - without moving from the village. But, if you do, The West Somerset Railway, England’s longest heritage railway, has a beautifully restored station at Dunster should you fancy travelling by steam through the Somerset countryside. Or why not explore the moorland walks and villages of the Exmoor National Park, for which Dunster is a perfect gateway?
