An award-winning luxury cottage in the heart of the beautiful Exmoor village of Dunster. The cosy yet spacious three-bedroom Exmoor holiday cottage boasts cruck beams, oak screens, a stunning four-poster bed, wood burning stove, patio and deck. Two reserved parking spaces. Sleeps 6. Dogs welcome.
Our award-winning Somerset holiday cottage, ‘The Oval’, is the ideal place to stay while exploring Dunster and Exmoor. Centrally located within easy distance of all the village shops, pubs and restaurants, it was built in the winter of 1366 according to the specialists from TV's Time Team. As one of the oldest houses in Dunster, this cosy Exmoor holiday cottage has original cruck beams, oak screening, a stunning four-poster bed, wood burning stove, stone floors and many more fascinating features, as well as top-of-the-range mod cons. The Oval sleeps six in three bedrooms.
Downstairs you’ll find a comfortable sitting room with a wood-burning stove, a 50” smart TV with Netflix and DVD player; a large well-equipped kitchen, dining room and a well-stocked playroom/reading room, as well as a utility room that was probably once used to house a couple of animals in the winter! Outside there’s a pretty patio with seating and steps to the deck with wonderful views across the countryside. Upstairs you'll find two double rooms with en-suites, and a twin.
Central heating, bed linen, and towels are included. Wi-Fi. We are very lucky to have two reserved parking spaces nearby. Dogs are welcome.
We have shared the Oval with guests since 2010, and many return. We are proud that in 2018 The Oval won a Sykes Cottages Gem Award in the 'Best Historical Property' category.
Here are some comments from our Visitors Book:

“This was our first time in England and Somerset, and we feel at home. A wonderful house, beautiful village, nice people and a great landscape surrounding it, and friendly pubs. We came a long way from Germany, but it was worth every mile. We’ll come back!” July 2018
“Thank you, we had a most wonderful stay. The cottage was everything and more! The area is beautiful, and the walks are all fantastic. Everyone was very friendly and made a lot of fuss of our dog Digby. We will be back, we have fallen in love with Dunster and The Oval!” June 2018
“We shall be back - the cottage was in a superb location, everywhere in Dunster was walkable, and as we have a spaniel that was an important factor in choosing The Oval. There are plenty of walks from the front door and loads of information provided in the property. The cottage was absolutely great, we were living in lots of history and every amenity was thought of, even the car parking spaces, great touch.” May 2018
The medieval village of Dunster is packed with interesting places including the National Trust castle, a working water mill, the famous Gallox Bridge and ancient dovecote. Add to that the stunning Yarn Market and today’s interesting range of independent shops and tea rooms and you’ll be spoilt for choice! .
You could go to Dunster for a week and find something fascinating to see or do every day - without moving from the village. But, if you do, The West Somerset Railway, England's longest heritage railway has a station at Dunster should you fancy travelling by steam through the Somerset countryside. Or why not explore the moorland walks and villages of the Exmoor National Park for which Dunster is a perfect gateway.
