Stunning Rural Cottage Rentals in Sussex

This part of England is a popular destination amongst tourists both at home and abroad and a great way to explore the county is to rent a Sussex holiday cottage. Strictly speaking this Sussex is actually two counties: East Susses and West Sussex. Bothe share the same coastline and England's newest National Park: The South Downs. Sussex, (or, as the old song has it -Sussex by the Sea) has a beautiful coastline embracing many Blue Flag beaches - Worthing, Bognor Regis, Littlehampton, Eastbourne and Brighton with its pier and the extravagant Royal Pavilion built for the Prince Regent in 1822. Visit the little fishing harbour at Hastings - and the chance to see where King Harold fell in 1066 or try surfing at West Wittering, and the gloriously-named Seven Sisters chalk cliffs, three and a half of which are a feature of the Country Park at Seaford.

Popular Towns

in Sussex

  1. Lewes
  2. Rye

Sussex is home to so many major events and festivals, the host towns all becoming internationally famous. Choose from racing at Goodwood, opera at Glyndebourne (take your own picnic, complete with candelabra), choir festivals in Chichester Cathedral, orchestral concerts in Goodwood House, and a Firework Proms at Arundel Castle. Rudyard Kiping lived and wrote many of his literary works in Susses, living at Batemans near Burwash in East Sussex. His home, reputedly haunted by Kipling's ghost is now owned by the National Trust and open to the public.

Arundel also has a Ghost Experience tour with maybe a haunting encounter in the old prison cells. The Georgian seaside resort of Brighton with its pier, Volks Electric Railway and The Laynes is home to two of England's biggest festivals, the Brighton Festival in May and the Paramount Comedy Festival in October, featuring top comedians. More days out for visitors are on offer at The Bluebell Steam Railway or the 14th century Bodiam Castle. Actually, Sussex has so many castles, an indication of its place in English history. The oldest is perhaps the Celtic Iron Age fort at Chanctonbury Ring. Spend nights out at the Art Deco De la Warr Pavilion in Bexhill. Book a holiday cottage for a winter break in November to experience the Lewes Bonfires at Guy Fawkes time. A final major plus for this county is its record of racking up more sunshine hours than any other English county.
