The Gables stands in a rural location on the edge of Shepley, a small West Yorkshire Pennine village in the picturesque Holme Valley near Holmfirth. This recently restored holiday cottage sleeps 4 in two bedrooms. It provides an excellent base for holidays exploring the Yorkshire Pennines and the nearby Derbyshire Peak District. Holmfirth itself is well worth a visit; an old mill town, it is perhaps better known as the location for the TV series ‘Last of the Summer Wine’. Climb Nora Batty’s Steps and pile on a few calories at Sid’s Café as you explore this characterful town and its 19th Century architecture.

The Gables dates back the better part of 300-years. Once Shepley’s village shop, a lot of love, care and attention has been invested in restoring it as a comfortable, fully-equipped holiday cottage, suitable for family holidays or romantic escapes for couples. Many of its original features, such as its four fireplaces, and original beams have been retained, blending in beautifully with the warm earthy/neutral tones used to decorate the rooms. The overall effect is of a warm, tranquil haven – an inviting home to return to and relax after a day exploring West Yorkshire’s many rural, cultural and historic attractions.

With Wi-Fi and being centrally heated throughout, accommodation at The Gables in Shepley comprises:

  • A Lounge with one of those lovely big 4-seater Chesterfield sofas that simply invites you to curl up on its comfortable cushions with a glass of wine or mug of hot chocolate. The lounge also contains a large coffee table, a TV and DVD player.

  • Dining Room with a 4-seat pitch-pine dining table, 2-seat Chesterfield sofa and, for extra warmth and ambience on winter evenings, a multi-fuel stove.

  • Country-style fitted Kitchen with separate Pantry. The kitchen contains all the equipment and utensils necessary for feeding up to 4 guests morning, noon and night. These include a range cooker, fridge, combination microwave, toaster and a washing machine. The Pantry contains a large fridge-freezer.

On the first floor:

• Master bedroom with King-size bed. There’s no need to live out of your suitcases as the bedroom possess ample storage space, having twin chests of drawers and a large double wardrobe as well as additional built in storage spaces.

• Twin bedroom with two full-size single beds, each with a bedside cabinet, chest of drawers and built-In cabinet space.

• Bathroom: Furnished in a captivating vintage-style, it contains a roll-top bath, separate shower cubicle, WC, and basin. An attractive cabinet and crystal chandeliers add to the charm of this lovely room.

Outside, to the front of The Gables is an enclosed garden laid to lawn, while to the rear is a small courtyard. There is plenty of unrestricted parking on the lane to the front of the cottage.

The Gables is a non-smoking cottage. For peace of mind it is properly equipped with smoke detectors, Carbon monoxide alarm, fire blanket and fire extinguisher. The rental includes bed linen, towels, a hair-dryer and ironing facilities. Please note that we are unable to accept pets.

Within Shepley itself, there are pleasant evenings out to be enjoyed at the local country pub, The Farmers Boy – which is also a great place to eat should chefs decide they need an occasional night off from self-catering duties.

Other places within easy reach and well worth a visit, are the * Yorkshire Sculpture at Bretton Hall in West Bretton, a fascinating place in the grounds of a stately home that will appeal to children as well as adults and a lovely place for scenic walks * Chatsworth – one of the UK’s grandest of stately homes and much used as a TV and film location * The great Yorkshire cities of Leeds, Bradford and Sheffield, with their attractive industrial heritage, superb museums, theatres and sporting events, let alone some superb retail therapy opportunities! A little further afield, but fascinating day-trip destinations are Buxton, Matlock Spa and York.


The Gables is available for weekend and midweek bookings (minimum of 3 night) as well as weekly or fortnightly longer holidays.
