Independent Cottages or Agency Managed Cottages: What’s The Difference?
Booking Independent Cottages: You book directly with the owner. One benefit is that you may well get more for your money as you’re not paying a surcharge or booking fee applied by a holiday cottage agency for their services.
By booking directly with an independent owner, not only will they be able to answer your questions more accurately because they will know their property better than an agency. Many UK holiday cottage owners will also feel a greater sense of responsibility for their part in ensuring you enjoy a memorable holiday (and plan to return). Some, but not all independent owners will be able to accept payments by card – so expect to use bank transfers or even a good old cheque.
Booking through a UK holiday cottage agency: An agency provides you with more security – whether that is a well-oiled booking system for different payment options or someone to be able to deal with should you ever have to make a complaint about a property. Some agencies also have their own grading system to help you compare otherwise similar properties. You should check first to ensure that the agency does not charge you a booking fee. Not many do these days – but it is a good question to ask! Agencies charge the cottage owner a commission and this may be reflected in the tariff.
