The ‘Llan’ in ‘Llangollen’ has religious connotations, tracing back to the town’s past, where Saint Collen, a 6th century monk, founded a riverside church. Visit the medieval Castell Dians Bran to learn more about the area’s history, fascinatingly built upon much more ancient Iron Age grounds. These sights are gorgeous during the summertime, which also happens to be festival season. Visit Llangollen in the second week of July and you will be just in time for the International Eisteddfod Parade, a true Welsh treat with plenty of music, dancing and singing. The Fringe Festival is also held in July, as is Dee Rocks, held in the town hall, perfect to reach from your holiday cottage. Llangollen is great for cultural appreciation of all kinds, with live music often playing in local pubs – best enjoyed, of course, with a cool pint. A splendid holiday destination for families and friends, Llangollen has something to keep everyone entertained – both for those looking to be kept on their toes, or for those looking for the exact opposite!
