Not for nothing is Salcombe known as 'Devon's Sailing Capital'. Sailing is easily the main attraction, with superb conditions suiting yachts of all sizes, from windsurfers to ocean racers. Hire a dinghy for the day and sail your way around this delightfully unspoilt ria across to East Portlemouth or inland towards Kingsbridge. Salcombe is also popular for other activities, such as surfing, kayaking and fishing. Spend the day at the harbour or on the docks, or even out on the water waiting for a bite for your catch of the day. Join Discovery Surf School and learn to stand up on the water or improve your technique with a group as large as you choose. For a genteel day out on the water (where someone else does all the work), the Railway and Riverboat Company offers a choice of pleasure boat trips.

Away from the water, you can try your abilities on horseback and have riding lessons across the outstanding countryside surrounding Batson Creek. Then, spend a day following well-trodden trails, searching for wildlife and waterfalls and exploring the countryside on foot. You don't need a yacht to enjoy a holiday in Salcombe. There are some lovely sandy beaches in delightful coves for sand castle building, bathing and rock pooling, some of which can be reached by ferry. Soar Mill Cove, East Portlemouth Beach and North Sands Beach all offer relaxing days out on the shore.

Being so close to the water, the local food is mainly seafood and of the highest standard. Enjoy a range of locations and styles of food throughout the town, from warm, familiar pubs to fine dining with the best local food and hospitality the town offers.

Salcombe also has a large shopping scene consisting of a lovely mix of well-known brands and smaller independent shops and boutiques. Salcombe is a beautiful family destination and a gorgeous retreat with a wealth of activities and attractions (and holiday cottages, of course!).
