Rothesay, Isle of Bute
Rothesay is a classic Victorian resort on the Isle of Bute, in Scotland. It lies on the craggy coast of the Firth of Clyde with a backdrop of forests and hills, and spectacular views across the water towards Loch Striven. From your holiday cottage in Rothesay, the town centre will be a stroll away. The old town is centred around the ruins of a 13th-century castle, with lovely gardens and unique architecture, such as the Isle of Bute Discovery Centre, a circular building of cast iron and glass, which is now home to a theatre and cinema. As you explore Rothesay’s seafront squares and art deco pavilion, it is easy to see why it is such a long-running favourite among Scottish holidaymakers. In recent years, the town has undergone an exciting regeneration, with Victorian shops turned into boutiques and upcycled furniture emporiums alongside traditional cafes and pubs. Look out for Musicker, a vegetarian café selling books and guitars, Print Point, a book shop where you can enjoy a good cup of coffee, and the Bute Brew Company for locally brewed beer. For the finest Bute meat, head to Macqueen's butchers on Bishop Street. Nearby, Ritchie’s sells delicious smoked fish and cheese. The Isle of Bute is blessed with pristine sandy beaches, such as Ettrick Bay, a short drive north of Rothesay, through Port Bannatyne.
