Whincroft, Dartmoor Cottage in Mary Tavy

Looking for a base in the Devon countryside to explore and unwind.

Entry into this pet-friendly holiday cottage is through a pretty, whitewashed porch where walking boots and welly boots can kicked off. Once inside, the informal dining room, centrally positioned, is the perfect place to gather for special times together.

The restful sitting room decorated in soft neutral hues is an invitation to unwind and curl up on pale squashy sofas, with the glows of a wood-burning stove adding further warmth to chilly autumnal evenings. Enjoy favourite shows and films on the wall-mounted TV with Blue Ray and Roku device whilst teens and children can escape to the snug room next door, equipped with a TV and PlayStation 4.

More recently extended, the kitchen is a place to enjoy coffee and breakfast in the morning sunshine that streams through patio doors. Prepare warming meals in the Aga after long walks on the moor; there is a further electric oven in the useful utility room with a cloakroom to the side.

Upstairs, four tasteful bedrooms, each dressed in crisp white linen, are individually styled to reflect the ever-changing colours of the moorland. A spacious master bedroom with a king-size bed benefits from an en-suite shower room.

The sunny, whitewashed twin bedroom with accents of yellow and grey can be pushed together to create a super-king bed. Heather and greens are the theme for the pretty, dual-aspect double bedroom, which has views of the garden and the countryside beyond.

The delightful single room, decorated in ‘old white,’ looks out over the garden to the rear. These bedrooms are served by a family bathroom with a bath and shower overhead.

To the rear, step into a heavenly-scented courtyard garden planted with colourful shrubs and pots. A summerhouse adorned with fairy lights offers a shady spot from summer sunshine and shelter if the weather is less than perfect.

An expanse of lawn garden provides a further patio with seating, a hammock to snooze and a timber-clad inflatable 4-person hot tub. Don your walking boots and step out onto footpaths leading from your doorstep onto the moor.

Enjoy the 11 miles of traffic-free route The Granite Way that stretches from Okehampton to Lydford, winding through some of the most stunning Dartmoor countryside and moorland.

Rest and enjoy lunch in one of the many great pubs in the location, the closest being the Peter Tavy Inn, a 15-minute walk away. For family days out, visit Buckland Abbey, Lydford Gorge, Castle Drogo and Dartmoor Zoo, and further afield, the Eden Project and the sandy beaches of the north or south coast are only an hour or so away by car.

Four miles away, the market town of Tavistock boasts an award-winning bi-weekly farmers market and a vast selection of independent shops, restaurants and cafés to enjoy.

Whincroft is a house for all seasons and will provide a wonderful and relaxing base to explore and recharge the batteries.
