Find My Favourite Holiday Cottages in Okehampton

A tranquil town in West Devon, Okehampton is the northern gateway to Dartmoor. Here you will find all main services, including a Waitrose, to top up the larder in your Devon self-catering holiday cottage. A superb place for a weekend getaway to an idyllic holiday cottage, Okehampton is overflowing with romantic views and opportunities for walking. The Meldon Quarry Walk takes you six miles along some of the prettiest points of Dartmoor, while Granite Way is perfect if you bring your bike. The trail is also part of the Devon Coast to Coast route, offering breathtaking views along its entire length. Take some time off from walking by visiting the Plymouth Inn for a couple of pints of real ale or a refreshing glass of wine topped with good, traditional food. If the day is sunny, go to the Crossways Inn and soak up the afternoon rays in their beer garden.

Founded by the Saxons, Okehampton has a long and fascinating past. Visit the Museum of Dartmoor Life to learn more through fun, interactive displays. Okehampton is not just for adults – kids have lots to choose from, too, such as a day trip to Okehampton Castle. The largest castle in Devon has rumours of hauntings – although that will be quickly forgotten while playing outside in the nearby woods or sitting down for a lovely picnic by the river. If local art is what you are after, then the Salar Gallery often exhibits the work of Devonian artists, showcasing talents from all corners of this beautiful county. Visit Simmons Park afterwards for more adventuring with the kids, or take some time to play cricket or have a go at the bowling green. The Bowden Hostas is also a great place to visit, which is home to the lovely Hostas plant – and as if all of this is not enough, there is also The Dartmoor Minature Pony Centre, which is as adorable as it sounds. Take the time to visit Okehampton and see what it is all about from a nearby holiday cottage!
