The Mill

The Mill at Hembury Mill made its first public appearance in the Domesday Book. 900 years later, the water wheel still turns. Still, The Mill now welcomes families, friends and their pets seeking relaxing self-catering holidays in a secluded part of Dorset’s Jurassic Coast near Bridport, West Bay and Burton Breadstick. A local pub in the village is just a short walk from the cottage.

The Mill sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms in rooms that have been tastefully refurbished to provide comfortable living spaces that still retain the original character of this historic mill. Hembury Mill is the last remaining watermill in Dorset that still retains its water wheel and all the original flour-milling machinery.

Accommodation in this pet-friendly Dorset holiday cottage spans three floors. Three comfortable bedrooms (one en suite) have taken their place where the bin floor and the sack floor once stood. Glass-screened viewing areas overlooking the original mill machinery have been cleverly incorporated within the living area and master bedroom.

The Living Area contains seating for six guests. Choose between viewing the ancient millstones through the glass screen or watching Countryfile on the flat-screen TV (there is also a DVD and Freeview for alternative viewings). An iPod dock in the lounge allows you to bring your own music to your ears.

Hand-made oak units in the kitchen and a range of new appliances will make the self-catering aspect of your holiday more of a pleasure than a chore. Facilities include a washing machine/tumble drier, red electric Aga, fridge/freezer, microwave, toaster and many other smaller appliances and utensils.

The three bedrooms comprise two doubles and a twin. The Master Bedroom, with a vaulted, oak-beamed ceiling and a glass viewing area of the mill machinery, has an en-suite bathroom with a Victorian roll-top bath and heated towel rail. The second double bedroom, while not having a viewing area, does have a flat-screen TV with Freeview to enjoy while you relax in bed.

The third bedroom has twin beds and an internal balcony that looks down on mill machinery in the entrance lobby below.

For families with infants, a cot (bring your own bedding), a highchair and stairgates are included in the rent. Beds are made up with fresh bedlinen and towel sets prior to await your arrival. If you plan to spend a few days on nearby beaches, please bring your own beach towels.

The Mill looks across to the original mill leat and an orchard, beyond which lie superb rural views of the Dorset countryside. On warm days and evenings, sit outside to eat, BBQ or relax by the mill pond. The garden contains slides and swings for children and shallow streams with overhanging trees to dabble and paddle. Please note that young children should be supervised in the garden.

There is space to park up to three cars plus bicycles, kayaks and dinghies.
