To get the best out of your holiday when booking a self-catering property with a hot tub, here are some questions to ask before booking:

• Is the hot tub included in the price, or do you pay a supplement?

• Is it a private or shared hot tub?

• Is it in a spot not overlooked by the rest of the street?

• Will it be available for the dates you plan to book?

• Are there any ‘house’ or ‘safety’ rules regarding its use?

• Do you need to bring your own towels for hot tub use?

• How is the hot tub lit?

• Is it in the open air or undercover?

If you are booking directly with the owner, they will have all the answers, but any agency worth its salt should also be able to tell you all you need to know. Just do not be afraid to ask!

A variation of a hot tub is a swim spa. For the uninitiated, this is a longish tub in which a water current flows from one end to the other to enable you to swim against it. You can swim or doggy paddle for ages (you can adjust the flow strength) and go nowhere while merrily burning off the calories from last night’s dinner.
