Bishop Cottage, Skinningrove

Bishop Cottage makes the perfect home base for small groups on holiday in North East England. Located in the former fishing and mining village of Skinningrove in Cleveland, this coastal cottage is one of three single-storey cottages built on the site of the original stables that housed the pit ponies servicing the town’s (long-gone) iron mine.

The pet-friendly cottage includes a king-size double bedroom, a fitted kitchen with a breakfast bar that seats four, and a sitting room with a dining area, sofa bed and TV with FreeSat. The cottage shares a communal garden with both lawned and gravelled areas, with a furnished patio and barbecue for enjoying the crisp seaside air at night.

Skinningrove sits close to North Sea beaches, the Cleveland Way National Trail and the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum, while the nearby North York Moors National Park beckons with miles of hiking and biking trails to take in the beautiful moorlands.

A very pleasant, thoughtfully arranged property. Friendly and helpful owners.

The cottage was exceptionally well presented with everything we could possibly need. The owners were close by and available should we need them. The wine and chocolates were a lovely gesture and much appreciated.

We have had a really good holiday. The area was lovely with beautiful scenery and lovely walks. The cottage was lovely, really clean and comfortable, with everything we needed and good car parking.

Mr Watson

Because of my disability we particularly like the fact that being on one level made life so much easier than a house with an upstairs. The cottage was exceptionally well presented with everything you need to live somewhere. Also very dog friendly the countryside and nearby resorts were really good. Weather sunny everyday was such a welcome bonus.

Mrs Maguire

Excellent accommodation in a very good holiday location.

Mrs Nicholls

This was a fabulous cottage, everything we needed and near to lots of places to visit. Would recommend this area, Saltburn is near as is Robin Hoods Bay and more, beautiful beaches and walks. Bishop Cottage is a dream, had everything we needed and more. Loved the extra touches especially chocolates and wine! We had a really wonderful holiday and even had glorious sunshine all week.

Mrs Porte

Excellent presentation of the cottage. The owners could not have been more helpful. The cleanliness of the cottage was exemplary. All in all, this is a cottage to recommend, which I will be doing, and will visit again in the not to distant future.

We loved everything, it was the most relaxing time we have had in a very long time.

Mrs Watt

The cottage is in a lovely quiet village in walking distance to the beach which is quiet and ideal for long dog walks. Dogs are welcome in the local pub and the fish and chips are the best. We found lots of beaches we'd never visited before and all the North Yorkshire Moors villages - all within an easy car drive. Cannot fault the cottage, lots of little extra touches that really make a difference.

Mrs Dawson

The cottage was superb in every way and the owner was very nice. Setting of cottage lovely, -

It was in a lovely area surrounded by lots of places to walk with our dog. Very friendly owners and staff at their cafe / bar situated within the grounds of the cottages. The location and situation of Bishop Cottage is perfect and an excellent, homely, comfortable base from which to tour and explore the north east of England. The owners, along with their family and friends involved in running and maintaining the property are some of the nicest, kindest people we have ever met. Nothing is too much trouble, from arrival to departure and the welcome pack is a lovely treat.

A very welcoming and superb cottage, with many extras

We would gladly recomment this cottage to anyone. It cottage was superbly clean and comfortable, with many added extras on arrival. Our dog was very welcome, and the short walk to the dog friendly beach was completed twice a day much to the delight of the dog, who loves beaches. We will certainly be visiting one of Sykes Cottages again in the near future.

Quiet relaxing and clean.

A wonderful complex situated on the quiet side of the village. The cottage was clean and well designed. The surronding area is beautifull and the adjacent iron mine is a must visit place.
Down side is that there is not a decent pub within walking distance.

Well Appointed Cottage, Car Essential.

Bishop cottage is a new build mews type accomodation, built on the site of what was once the pit ponies stables. When we stayed there in December 2010, only half the complex was finished, but the surroundings were well kept and presentable.

The cottage is well furnished, very well heated, and compact. There are nice touches in terms of the furnishings. The property though misses perhaps more seating in the living room, a window in the kitchen, and a safe enclosed garden outdoors for pets and children, all fairly minor admittedly.

In terms of location a car is quite frankly an essential, the closest pub wasnt the most presentable, and albeit we visited over Christmas the fish and chip shop was closed, as was the ironstone mining museum. We of course booked self catering but were disappointed with the eating options therefore within walking distance, eating in most nights (there are supermarkets in Saltburn, Staithes, Loftus and Whitby) and enjoying the local fish and chips at lunchtime in Whitby generally!

Skinningrove is an honest if unpicturesque former mining town, and that was the main source of its income till the sixties, so dont expect a Staithes, or a Robin hoods bay, the town just doesnt play to its locational strengths in those senses, at times walking around it we did wonder if we were by the seaside or in a durham mining town!

it does though have easy access to some beautiful walking to both staithes and Saltburn (both a good couple of hours) Should the venture of the cottage complex take off then Skinningroves location is surely its strongpoint, but some kind of not even touristy but basic facilities are crying out to be built (a seafront cafe, a rehash of the towns only pub)

In summary a nice cottage, but locationally with limitations if one expects evening entertainment.

Clean, comfortable and relaxing.

This was the first time myself and my dog stayed at Bishops Cottage, Skinningrove, and I was delighted. The cottage was spacious, clean, and very comfortable. Staff were very helpful and friendly.
I love Skinningrove, and I have visited there many times, as I have friends in Loftus. It isnt the prettiest place, but is unspoilt and it has interesting history. I love the beaches; the people are friendly and I notice that they are trying hard to enhance one or two areas , especially involving local children in pride of Skinningrove I definitely will return.
